Meller's Assumptions in His Book

Mellert sets his five assumptions as follows:
"as members of the human species, future generations will be essentially the same the same as we do." "Future generations will seek their own pleasure, just as we do." "One is born in a given generation by an accident of history." "Our survival as a species is more important than our individual survival." "We are one with future generations, and we will share actively (though not personally) in their lives." on ethical questions in turn.
The thrust of his responses is that we should feel as obligated to the welfare of future generations as we are to the welfare of our won. In some cases, this will mean sacrificing current pleasures for the sake of people we will never know. But in so sacrificing we bequeath to the future a sense of responsibility, a statement of our connectedness to those yet to be born. Such an act, says hem hold for us the ultimate meaning of our lives.
Mellert's rational appeal, conducted as it is at a level of abstraction, is sale and thoroughly agreeable. He uses a carefully reasoned argument to reach a conclusion with which most would agree, even without the benefit of an argument. But we wonder whether the agreement is easier in principle than in fact. He does not process any particular sacrifices we would need to make for the sake of future generations; if he did, this is precisely where he would encounter resistance. We can all agree about the problems that beat us. What to do in response to a particular problem, such as nuclear war, is the issue.
Mellert probably steers clear of specific proposals by design, and for his purposes this seems just as well: he wants us to agree in principle on our responsibility to future generations before undertaking action. Yet action is called for.
