Unabridged Vs Abridged Audio Book Which One Is Better?

Unabridged Vs Abridged Audio Book - Which One Is Better? by Dee Bovis

Unabridged or abridged audio book? Which type of audio book should you choose? Which will give you the most enjoyment? Let's start by learning the details about each type.

Most books are written to be read silently and would take many hours to read aloud. Hence, when most audio books are being prepared for release, the book text will need to be shortened, or abridged.

How does this happen? For a fiction book, oftentimes the back story is cut. Some secondary plotlines may not make it into the audio book. For non-fiction books, examples and stories may be removed. Although most books are released in abridged audio book form, some popular titles are released in both abridged and unabridged.

What makes an unabridged audio book different from an abridged audio book? An unabridged audio book contains every word from the original book. These books are especially of interest to people who have poor eyesight or are blind.

If both versions are released, the unabridged version will likely cost more than the abridged version. Here are some examples of audio CDs that show costs and times that vary:

Back on Blossom Street by Debbie MacomberUnabridged - $36.95 - 11 hoursAbridged - $24.95 - 5 hours 9 minutes

The 6th Target by James PattersonUnabridged - $39.98 - 8.25 hoursAbridged - $29.98 - 6 hours 20 minutes

Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter IsaacsonUnabridged - $49.95 - 21.5 hoursAbridged - $29.95 - 7 hours

So, back to the question, unabridged or abridged audio book, which is better? It comes down to a personal issue. If you want to read more audio books and save money on each one, buy the abridged audio book version. Want to experience the full text of the book the way the author intended? Pick up an unabridged copy.
