The "CBS TV Evening News With Dan Rather", July 4, 1980, featured this segment of the Charles Kuralt series - "On The Road With Charles Kuralt". (The series was later published in hard and paperback editions.) It was after Joe DelVecchio, descendant from three generations of balloon vendors, conceived of the idea of delivering balloons in bunches.
Joe, who started selling balloons with his father in 1956 at 14, went on to earn a Master's degree, and subsequently worked as a special assistant to the Governor of Massachusetts, the Secretary of Transportation, and served in the West Wing of the White House. He left his government job in 1976 and opened Balloon Bouquets in Washington DC.
The novel idea captured the national imagination as a colorful, economical, and playful alternative to flowers. Joe opened branches in 21 cities nationwide, and the balloon delivery and decorating industry had its beginnings. News articles about the novel idea began appearing in the national press, including Glamour, Inc., US, People, Good Housekeeping, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and countless other newspaper sydications. The DelVecchio family continues the tradition of selling balloons in America - a history that dates back to Joe's grandfather, who brought the first balloon molds to America in 1896.
